It can be difficult to tell which TV shows have actually been the most popular in the world. As the world gets more connected and we have access to more news and entertainment outlets than ever before, it seems like every hot new TV program is the ‘most watched ever’. Today we go back to the TV show record books, and find out which TV program across the world have been watched by the largest-ever audiences.
1. Beatles on Ed Sullivan:
An amazing record of 73 million households watched this TV showing 1964 … 45.1% of the entire United States.
2. Elvis Presley on Ed Sullivan:
This TV show got fewer viewers, but a much higher percentage of households – 82.6% of the television-owning public saw this when it was aired in 1956.
3. Diane Sawyer interviews Michael Jackson:
Michael Jackson had well and truly retreated from the world by 2003, yet this Diane Sawyer/60 minutes interview was watched by 81% of households in America.
4. 2006 Fifa World Cup:
No doubt with the commoditisation of technology, this record will be broken by the 2010 South Africa World Cup. In 2006 though, the TV programs airing the FIFA World Cup averaged 95 million viewers worldwide … per match!
5. Apollo 11 moon landing:
This TV show holds the all-time record for the most (estimated)viewers worldwide … and will no doubt hold the all-time TV show record for the greatest proportion of worldwide TV owner/viewers ever. 600 million people watched this TV show, back in 1969.
6. Princess Diana’s funeral:
In1997, the funeral of the Princess of Wales TV program‘reportedly’ attracted over 2 billion viewers worldwide. That would be one-third of the entire population of the world. Do remember though that these figures aren’t officially verified by TV show ratings statistics.
